Over the past three decades, Asia has been playing a key role as a global manufacturing supply hub, which has driven its central role in the global supply chain. In the 1980's and early 1990's, prior to the full expansion of FDI into China, Singapore and Hong Kong became sophisticated logistics hubs, serving the manufacturing centers of Taiwan, Korea, Southern China, Malaysia, and Thailand. Japan largely handled its own supply chain, as did Australia/New Zealand.
Asia now manufactures and assembles increasingly sophisticated products, ranging from consumer products, to bulk and fine chemicals, to highly engineered machine tools and nano-technology-derived products.
